Tutorial: Creating Atmosphere with Textures

A lot of people ask me how I make my illustrations look sort of painted or give them their non-computerised look. So to answer this I've decided to give you guys a tutorial of how I do it for my recent illustration of Forest Girl, Evie.

So, to start off with I created the way I wanted Evie to look in her basic shapes and colour, then I overlay a free paper texture to give her a little more atmosphere.

1) To do this first step I import the texture and give my image a white background, behind the blue circle. Then I move the texture over the entire image and use the transparency window and from the drop down box select 'Colour Burn'.

**TIP**You'll notice that this will darken your colours and give them more contrast so if some colours are too bright or now clash next to one and other lighten or even change the colour completely - so don't spend hours on the basic illustration's colouring before adding the texture!

So now you have a basic textured artwork, and in some cases this is enough to make that certain illustration Pop with atmosphere. But there are further steps you can take to make it more atmospheric.

2) For this next stage I play with shadows and use the inner glow feature with a lot of the shapes to give them their shading.

Focussing on the eye for a demonstration I use both the inner and outer glow effects that can be found under Effect > Stylise

To get the desired effect I go for a colour similar to the colour of the object but a little darker, I then play around with it's opacity and blur size, checking the preview every now and again to reach the look I like.

It's important to note that here on the eye I have done both an inner and outer glow for the white of the eye to give it an atmospheric 'deep socket' look and to give the eye some shape.

3) For this step it's about continuing step 2) throughout the whole face and altering the colours to perfect them with your chosen texture.

4) This step's just about adding some finishing touches and working on the background to really give some true atmosphere.

For this illustration I've worked into the background to create a forest with a small fairy in front. I didn't want the trees or the fairy to be in sharp focus to take away from the girl's face so I used the Feather effect under Effect > Stylise to give it that soft focus.

And thats It! So pull it all together and you get the finished article at the top of the post. Thanks for reading.

I'm currently reading a book about the history of america. It conjures up great imagery of the American Indians.

According to the book they used the expression "what cheer" to ask how someone was, this is perhaps how the phrase 'Wotcha' came about.

Anyway she sort of looks like a flapper girl too but i prefer her as an American Indian.

This is my second in the project. For this one I walked around my little town and drew a few things whilst out. It was refreshing to do some work away from the computer screen for a little bit.

For this abstract landscape project I will focus on creating an image that combines colour schemes, layouts and hand rendered elements, changing each element completely for the next landscape. I am hoping this will allow me to work purely on aesthetics and find new and exciting ways of working!

PH+RM+CY Branding Development Ideas

I've been in discussions about a prospective brief for a pharmaceutical flyer. While experimenting with possible styles I decided to play around with a few elements to make up some artwork for a fictitious company I named PH+RM+CY.

The idea is a fresh and modern take on the traditional pharmacies we see on the high street. I quite liked the name, as it could easily be shortened to PH+ which is itself a chemical term. Now all I need is a few scientists to make the actual products with me and we're away. Any takers?

Toe Fluff Exhibition

A while ago I contributed my Toe Fluff critter to the Toe Fluff project by Steve Rack and he was featured in the show.
The exhibition was at the Post Modern Art Gallery in Swindon, UK and closed on August 11th. All profits went directly to Great Ormond Street Hospital and it was a great success!

The lovely Laura Adams has been in contact with me recently asking if I would be interested in submitting some designs to the company she works for; Decclo. It's a a lifestyle and tshirt company with a print shop in Bremerton, WA.

I've never designed t-shirts before so I was totally excited to get on board with this project. I've got to get myself in gear and sort out some solid designs yet, i'm promising myself this following week as a deadline to get some promising designs down. I'm praying for a sudden wave of inpiration!

I was in Copenhagen earlier this summer and found the buildings out there fascinating! I was doodling houses outside my window and started playing with them when they started to remind me of the houses in Copenhagen so that's what they became, sort of.

I had a couple of concepts when I drew my little diary critter yesterday and this was one of them.
This little science fellow is tweeting his daily events in a sort of diary fashion on his iPad. How modern!

The theme for this week's illustration friday is diary.
Instead of having lots of interesting stories addressed to him, this worried little diary has a pile of urgent bills to pay!

I tried out two different style and I think I prefer the hand-drawn one. What do you think?

The Toe Fluff Project at the Post Modern Art Gallery

I've just submitted this little critter to Steve Rack's Toe Fluff project.

The exhibition will be at the Post Modern Art Gallery in Swindon, UK and will be on from July 27th - August 11th and profits go directly to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Here are a couple of other designs I made...

This time last year I was in New York, wish I was back there. So I thought this should be the right time to share some photographs when I was over there. Unfortunately I lost all of the others but managed to scrape away the arty ones!

The most incredible city I've ever visited. I promise you I will live there one day...so if you live in New York and can find me a job in illustration i'd be incredibly grateful. You'd make my life!
